Go Ahead And Have A Snack
Aug 11th, 2009 | By Nutrition Staff | Category: Diet TipsWhen you think of being on a diet often you think of denying yourself food constantly and a nagging hunger. While diets do by definition dictate what and how much we consume there is no rule saying diets must leave you feeling hungry. For a diet to be successful we must be able to maintain it and few people can make it always being hungry. Healthy snacking is a strategy many people feel is effective in combating hunger throughout the day. Eating small amounts of healthy foods throughout the day can help you maintain your healthy eating goals and contribute to long term dieting and weight loss success.

Why Does Snacking Help Dieting?

It may seem at first counter-intuitive that eating more can help you lose weight. The key to snacking on a diet is to eat healthy foods. Having a green salad for lunch only to chow down on a bag of potato chips several hours later will not help you lose weight. Eating a handful of nuts or a cup of yogurt if you start to feel hungry in the mid-afternoon could very well tide you over until a healthy dinner in the evening. Between meal snacking can help you put on weight if you eat unhealthy foods. Fruits, nuts, yogurt and other healthy snack food alternatives can be excellent choices to maintain healthy eating throughout the day.
The other advantage to between meal snacking may be when you sit down for subsequent meals. If you deny yourself food all day while being hungry you are more likely to overeat when you do finally eat a meal. Calories are calories, limiting your intake during the day does not help if you overeat at night. By snacking throughout the day you will feel fuller, helping you eat less during meals.
Every one’s physiology is different. What works for one person may not be effective for another. While some people may be able to go all day without being hungry and feel great others need food every couple hours. If you do found yourself hungry between meals allow yourself a healthy snack, you may learn eating more means weighing less.
