Understanding Calories and Food Can Help You Achieve Your Goals

The calorie is a unit of measurement for energy. When used in the context of food and nutrition calories represent the amount of energy in food. It is important to understand calories and food because healthy eating means finding the right balance of food and caloric intake to fuel your lifestyle.  Overeating means we are consuming more calories than our bodies require.  Our bodies then convert and store the extra energy into fat which can lead to health and other problems. In order to successfully maintain a diet plan it is important to understand the following:

Calorie Counter

Calorie Counters are tools to help you track the amount of calories you are consuming daily. You may shudder when you think of the concept of “calorie counting” if it reminds you of some rigid diet you may have tried that had you counting calories one by one.  Calorie counting does not have to mean individual counting of all calories you eat throughout the day, but rather the idea that you are aware of the calories you are eating and trying to consume the appropriate amount for your lifestyle.  Experts estimate that humans need on average about 2,000 calories a day though that number can vary significantly based on many factors including height, weight, gender, age, and activity level.

Calories to Lose Weight

Because calories are a measure of the energy content in food they are directly related to how much weight you gain or lose on your diet. Every individual has a caloric baseline, essentially the number of calories their body needs everyday to maintain weight. Losing or gaining weight is simply a matter of eating more or less than your caloric baseline. Consuming less calories than your body requires each day forces your body to make up the difference by burning calories.

Weight Loss Chart

Once the link between caloric intake and weight loss or gain is well understand it is possible to plan your diet and fitness level for your optimum weight.  Unfortunately determining you caloric baseline is not easy as every is different and depends on many factors including age, gender, activity level, and weight amongst others. Weight loss charts can incorporate several factors to give you a fuller understanding on what your specific caloric baseline might be.

Calorie Calculator

Calorie Calculators are tools that can be used to determine your ideal caloric consumption for dieting goals.  Calorie calculators can consider several different factors including weight, height, fitness level, activity level, and age to provide a quideline for how many calories to eat.  Calories burned calculators can provide a basic quideline for the amount of food to eat to fuel your lifestyle.
