Vary Your Workout To Get Fit

Many of us have our favorite exercises and routines.  Those several movements or series that we constantly find ourselves returning to.  Whether it is a certain running path or getting on the elliptical there are just some activities individuals gravitate towards over others.  Working out and exercising should be an enjoyable exercise and so we should do what we enjoy, however to experience optimum benefit from any health routine variety is important. Introducing different exercises into your workout plan provides several benefits; promoting more balanced muscle development and new exercises forces your body to work hard at adapting.

The human body is comprised of hundreds of muscles and all movement is comprised of those muscles working in coordination.  All exercises work some muscles but not all in the same way and to the same degree.  Certain exercises may significantly over utilize certain muscle groups as opposed to others leading to an imbalance in muscle development.  In some instances competitive athletes such as pitchers or tennis players may purposely strive for this but most casual athletes benefit from a more balanced approach.  Repetitive movements can also cause injury, such as the enflamed elbow condition known as “tennis elbow”. By engaging in several different exercises the physical impact is spread mor evenly throughout the body, promoting increased muscle development and health.

The human body is incedibly adaptable.  The same small cup of coffee that used to help jumpstart your day now needs to be followed by a second and third cup before you get going.  That process, know as habituation, by which your body acclimated to the stimulating effects of caffiene occurs in response top exercise as well.  Someone who begins a running program is likely to feel extreemely tired as they begin but quickly make strides as they run further and faster.  Their performance will improve dramatically. If speed is the goal they have been successful, however if they are also interested in a cardiovascular and fat burning benefit they are likely doing worse than when they began because their body has become accustomed to the running motion.  By including a different type of cardio they can force their body back in high gear.

Trying a new exercise can not only provide physical benefits and decrease energy but may also allow you to try a new exercise that can fire up your motivation.  You never really know what you will like until you try it.  So next time you are thinking about cruising through the same 5 mile run your have for awhile hop on your bike or play some sports.  You’ll feel great and might find a new activity to keep you in shape.
